Setting Free the Kites
Setting Free the Kites by Alex George
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I absolutely loved this book. It’s a coming-of-age story of tragedy, life, love and friendship that takes place in the 1970’s. It has the same vibe as my favorite “boy books” of the era, The Outsiders, That Was Then-This is now, and Rumble Fish. Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much from this read–I salvaged it from among the advance reader remains at BN. I surely wasn’t expecting to be drawn into the characters so powerfully or transported in time so effortlessly. And I absolutely was not expecting to feel the same intense emotions I felt so many decades ago as a tween devouring SE Hinton for the first time. George is a masterful storyteller. And this is a wonderful, wonderful book.
